Is a Skid Steer 4-Wheeled or on 2 Tracks?

Skid steers are available in two configurations: four wheels or two tracks. Both configurations feature front and rear axles that synchronize their movements automatically. However, operators have the option to control each axle independently from the wheels on the opposite side of the machine.

Unlike traditional vehicles, skid steers have fixed wheels that maintain a straight alignment without turning. To change direction, operators manipulate the speed of the wheels on one side, causing them to skid or drag while the machine rotates in the opposite direction. This unique steering mechanism is the origin of the machine’s name.
