The difference between a Bobcat and a skid steer is branding! A skid steer is a versatile and compact machine usually used for excavation, whereas a Bobcat is a brand-named skid steer. The lightweight design and manoeuvrability of a skid steer/Bobcat make it suitable for various construction and landscaping projects.
Able to attach different tools such as buckets, tillers, drum mulchers and blades, a skid steer makes any excavation or construction project much quicker. We highly recommend adding a skid steer to your excavation project’s list for tool rental. Red Deer contractors can get in touch with our office at 403-863-3287 to arrange for heavy equipment rentals, including Bobcats/skid steers and their accessories.
Is a Skid Steer 4-Wheeled or on 2 Tracks?
Skid steers are available in two configurations: four wheels or two tracks. Both configurations feature front and rear axles that synchronize their movements automatically. However, operators have the option to control each axle independently from the wheels on the opposite side of the machine.
Unlike traditional vehicles, skid steers have fixed wheels that maintain a straight alignment without turning. To change direction, operators manipulate the speed of the wheels on one side, causing them to skid or drag while the machine rotates in the opposite direction. This unique steering mechanism is the origin of the machine’s name.
Buckets & Other Skid Steer Attachments
Skid steers are usually equipped with a bucket that is used to lift and move heavy materials like soil and gravel. The regular bucket can also be used to dig, though more specialised attachments are available for that purpose. The bucket and other attachments can be used for a wide range of work.
Clearing Snow:
In clearing snow from roads or job sites, a skid steer's bucket is efficient, but for more severe winter conditions, operators may opt for attachments like a snow blade or snow blower.
Excavating:
Attachments such as a ripper, trencher, tiller, or wheel saw enable skid steers to undertake excavation tasks effectively.
Construction:
Skid steers contribute to expediting work on construction and building projects, and attachments such as a cement mixer or pavement miller can be added for specific tasks.
Landscaping:
For landscaping tasks, attachments like a stump grinder, woodchipper, tree spade and trench-digging tools enhance the skid steer's versatility. Additionally, pallet forks and bale spears are ideal for warehouse and farm work.
Trenching and Digging:
Skid steers offer a broad selection of popular digging attachments, including the trench-digger, backhoe and auger, which functions akin to a corkscrew for precise hole digging.
